The pedestal idea was getting a bit redundant, so I began to use a rubber washer underneath to keep the ball from rolling away. Some painting tips:  Bouncing a  daylight blue stage light off of the top of the still life box deepens the blue shadows. I avoid "pasting" the numbers on the balls by adjusting the color of them in relationship to the direction of the light. Being aware of soft and hard edges is key to pulling the viewer's eye in and out of the picture plane.
