HAWAII WEEK:
"Waikiki Beach/Outrigger & Pink Hotel" Original Oil Painting by Eileen D. McCoy

"WAIKIKI BEACH/Outrigger"/ Original Oil Painting on  Archival Canvas panel/ 8"X10
HAWAII WEEK: Waikiki Beach/Outrigger/ Original oil painting
This original Plein Air* oil painting was painted on the beach in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu, featuring the Royal Hawaiian hotel in the background. I thought about calling this "The Yellow Inner Tube". In Hawaii, the children all run around with these colorful inner tubes attached to their bodies. The outrigger boats are always poised to whisk away the tourists.

This original Plein Air* oil painting was painted on the beach in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. Yep, there's that familiar "Diamond Head" in the background. The first time I visited here, my late father took my Aunt and I treking up the mountain.
Looking at this painting brings back wonderful memories of the climate and warm breezy weather. Wish I could be there now!

HAWAII WEEK: Beach in Hawaii Kai, Oahu/ Original oil painting

ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY EILEEN D. MCCOY
HAWAII WEEK: Beach in Hawaii Kai, Oahu/ Original oil painting
Take a break from the cold and snow with me as I feature plein air paintings from Hawaii. Plein air painting simply refers to the act of painting outside "in the air". The term is derived from the 19th century style of painting outdoors and became the central feature of French Impressionism.

This original oil painting was painted on a private beach in Hawaii Kai which I have visited twice prior. While it was winter back home, I was on the beach painting daily (wish I was there now). I packaged each one up and mailed them home as each one dried sufficiently. Each morning, I painted on this isolated stretch of beach; in the afternoon, I would occasionally meet up with a group of Hawaiian painters and paint on location with them.

Here's my portable, home-made set-up which worked great on the windy beach. The hanging bag weighs down the portable tripod. The car sun visor on the ground folds small and keeps pesky critters from nibbling on one's ankles. Everything folds and fits in into one bag. The tripod and panels are carried separately. It works.

Enjoy!  Thanks for sharing in my blog life. Eileen

The reflected light, bottle shapes, glass colors, and marbles were all an attraction as well as the challenge of capturing these subjects. With each painting, I discover something new that compels me to paint more...

"Young Master Hill" #20

PORTRAIT WEEK:
The fourth in this week's original oil painting portrait series is of a young, red-headed boy. He so patiently sat for me while his brother and friend's romped around upstairs. I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance as my college-aged son chaperoned him about for the summer. The wonderful colors in his complexion, hair, and eyes compelled me to paint him. I am always looking for willing subjects!

Many people ask me when I am drawing live at events "How do you draw or paint a person?" The truth is, painting anything takes patience, practice and a great deal of observation. I draw over 1500 people annually as Caricatures at parties and events in Kansas City. It is these constant comparisons that help one to develop a keen eye.

Enjoy! Eileen

"Lady in The White Hat"

SOLD
PORTRAIT WEEK:
This original oil portrait is of a delightful lady who made her appearance at an outdoor wedding reception and I just couldn't resist. Unlike the other portraits which were done live, this one was done in the studio from a photograph. The contrast between the large white hat and her complexion with that inviting smile made for such a fun subject. Another Red, white and blue motif.

Enjoy! Eileen

"Jack"

8" X 10" - Oil On Canvas-SOLD

PORTRAIT WEEK:
Jack's striking mane of white hair and ruddy complexion made for a wonderful "red, white and blue" color motif. I so enjoy drawing and painting people with such character and expression in their face.
Enjoy! Eileen

"LITTLE MISS LAIN"-Original Plein Air Painting

8"X6" Oil on Canvas-Original Oil Painting-SOLD
PORTRAIT WEEK:
This portrait was done live from the model in one sitting. I love the intensity in her expression; so much depth in her eyes. She is one of the most creative and inquisitive young girl's I have ever met.

Portraiture is my favorite subject for painting. It is good, however, for an artist to attempt a variety of subject matter and media, so I challenge myself daily.

ENJOY! Eileen

"CALEB THE FILM MAKER"

PORTRAIT WEEK:
This week I am featuring portraits. Today's feature is a portrait of Caleb, the film maker.
Caleb is the quintessence of the ultimate cool, confident, California, artist/film maker. The light casts a marvelous striped shadow that emphasizes his very artsy, youthful appearance.
He was a natural model with such wonderful features as the thoughtful eyes, unshaven face, the chain in the open denim shirt and, as he affectionately calls it: the "man-bun" in the back. The painting features a nice complementary color contrast of blue & orange.
Enjoy! Eileen

"The Honeymooners"

"The Honeymooners" Original Watercolor 20"X24"
 PORTRAIT WEEK:
Jim and Lisa Cooper of Re/Max commissioned this large watercolor which was done from the only photograph they had from wedding  back in the 80's (check out that make-up bag). It was such a pleasure to do this painting. You can feel the sunny day and the wind blowing through the lovely bride's hair and the simplicity of just starting out in life. Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words!

"Hydrangeas in Love Vase"

"Hydrangeas in Love Vase" 6"X8" original oil painting
Hydrangeas offer an array of blues and purples. The green fabric provided a nice tertiary color complement. My studio has a nice air of flowers and fruit from all the still life objects. Painting from life requires quick observation and decisiveness.
The flowers have wilted, but the painting remains!

"Purple Heart"

6"X8" Purple Heart-Original Oil painting on canvas
The title from this painting is derived from the fallen petal shaped like a heart. The painting works well because of the complementary colors: purple and yellow.  I also get much more lively results like this on a toned canvas.

The flowers have wilted, but the painting remains!

Original Oil Painting "Gerber Dressed in Blue" #10

"Gerber Dressed In Blue" 6"X8"  Original Oil on canvas panel.
SOLD
Gerber daisies are my favorite flower. I paired this one with a carnation and then set it in a mason jar, giving the compostion a  tri-color challenge of the reds, blues, and yellows in the white flower.  The key to painting anything is to develop a
keen eye: constantly make comparisons and paint what you see. The challenge here was to maintain unity in the painting. The flowers wilt, but the painting remains!
